Chapter Twenty-eight

It was late afternoon by the time Rachel left Kenton’s office. Elwyn had put Leona in one of the interview rooms. As she couldn’t be part of it, he would have to interview her, but she would watch, listen closely to what the girl said.

Her mobile rang. It was Jed. “Where are you?” she asked.

“At home, looking after Len,” he said. “I’ve had a call from your nick. Kenton wants me to come in for a chat. Blackmore’s been found on my site — dead.”

“I know. Kenton’s just told me. I’m not happy, Jed. It means I’m off the case and you’ll have to be interviewed.”

“Surely Kenton doesn’t think I had anything to do with Blackmore’s death?” He sounded surprised.

“We don’t know how he died yet, but I’m praying it was an accident.”

“That’ll mean health and safety breathing down my neck for the foreseeable.”

A small price to pay in Rachel’s opinion. “Not funny, Jed. The man’s dead and was found on your property. When Kenton speaks to you, make sure you tell him the truth, whatever that is.” Rachel finished the call. She’d speak to Jed at home when the interview with Leona was over. She’d hang around long enough to have a quick word with Elwyn afterwards and then call it a day.

Rachel didn’t have long to wait. Loud voices on the corridor alerted her to an argument. She went out to see what was going on. Jonny was rubbing his cheek.

“The little madam punched me one,” he said indignantly.

“You wound me up,” Leona retorted. “I’m here because I need protecting not because I’m guilty of anything.” She looked at Rachel. “This idiot wants my fingerprints and DNA.”

“You’re Leona?”

“The girl nodded. “I prefer Lee.”

“Okay, Lee. You’re here because you are in danger and can give us information that might prove useful. There is also the matter of the abductions, a serious crime that carries a heavy penalty.”

“Are you threatening me? Is this a matter of I talk or you throw the book at me?”

“You need to calm down, for now it’s just about procedure. When that’s sorted, DS Pryce and DC Farrell will interview you.”

“No.”

“You came to us, Lee, said you wanted to help, and in return we’ll keep you safe.”

“And I will help. But I want to talk to you, not this pair of clowns.”

Rachel looked at the two men and shook her head. “Elwyn — a word. Jonny, sit with Lee. I won’t be long.”

Rachel walked towards the main office, Elwyn following in her wake.

“Blackmore’s been found dead on one of Jed’s sites,” she told him. “So, naturally Kenton wants me off the case. I have told him about Leona but he’s adamant.”

“She’s asked for you. The girl is stubborn, Rachel. We can’t afford to have her clam up.”

Kenton was standing in the doorway. “Who’s that young woman sounding off in the interview room? I can hear her from my office.”

“Leona Lomax, sir,” Elwyn said. “She’s asked for help. There’s every possibility that she knows the people attempting to take over from the Trio, but she’s insisting on only speaking to DCI King.
